Potassium. Is anybody eating enough of this? So there had been studies showing that certain individuals (like in the autistic spectrum or ADHD) show improvement to sensory overstimulation when given potassium supplements. Channelopathies are disturbances in the function of ion channels used for proper mineral transport. These disturbances can be congenital or acquired (toxicity). So if your whole mineral transport system is off (plus if you are eating a shitty diet low in minerals in the first place), it's a recipe for disaster. Well, that's nothing new really. I just stumbled upon the connection of potassium in a Pyrolyria forum. I copy a bit here: Potassium deficiency has deep and far-reaching consequences. Maybe a reason why the high potassium (raw) vegan diets are so healing. I recently made a big effort to eat more veggies, and I had eaten already more than the average person before. I am even considering adding beans back to my diet. My last attempt of going vegan (high carb) started with good energy and great mood and ended in depression. Maybe it's the lack of Omega 3s. Maybe it is the body cleansing. I remember when I first went raw vegan years ago, the first 3 months I had lots of skin rashes, diarrhea at times and yes, depression. But then my mood lifted. Changing the gut biome takes time. I quote further: Here's what I think has been happening: In the presence of low potassium, my body has been excreting sodium, in order to keep the ratio closer to where it should be. This would explain the persistent "idiopathic calcium" I seem to excrete in my urine (the body will excrete calcium whenever it excretes sodium). Hmmm ... sending sodium and calcium to the kidneys all the time, might that set me up for anything? ... And if you're wondering: yes, I have kidney stones on both sides of my family. In blood tests I always had high potassium and low sodium. My blood pressure was always more on the low side. When I went raw vegan (no salt) I often felt dizzy and lightheaded. I have a strong appetite for salt and often feel like I am salt wasting. I have a feeling many of my issues stem from adrenal issues.
I was wondering if I should keep up my high salt intake. Maybe my need for sodium would reduce once I up my potassium, like the woman above posted (yes I also excreted high amounts of calcium in tests years ago). Which brings me back to high carb low fat low sodium veganism somehow..... :D
