One of the best things I did on my healing journey was giving up coffee. I had been a hardcore addict, back from my days when I was having an eating disorder starving myself for long times, just drinking coffee to keep me going and stop the hunger.
Coffee is absolutely detrimential to health. Not only does it often contain heavy metals like lead and cadmium, or pesticides, but it also heavily depletes your kidney JING (in Traditional Chinese Medicine this is your battery's energy for your whole life). It overstimulates and burns out the adrenals, leaving you fatigued over time. It depletes your minerals and is extremely acid on the body. Caffeine addiction is a thing though, and I know best how it is to stop. Here and there I tried in the past to quit. I would stop for a week, get through massive withdrawal symptoms and then would restart again, telling myself, I only have 1 small coffee a day (it would always end up with 3-4). Coffee withdrawal is hard. Crazy headaches, grumpiness and irritability, plus you are feeling like you have been robbed of the best thing of your day, a comforting morning ritual, a delicious treat. For the latter you can try switching to herbal coffee substitutes, like chicory or lupine coffee. For a milder withdrawal substitute your coffee with green tea or hot chocolate or mate tea. This way you still get some caffeine. But be careful not to get addicted to those substitutes too in the end. I ended up using cacao as my stimulant of the day and when I did a detox, the withdrawl symptoms were almost as bad as with coffee. But still, cacao is way better than coffee in my opinion, especially if it is raw unprocessed and unsweetened cacao. Careful though about your sources as cacao also is known to often contain high levels of cadmium and lead. The absolute best way to replace coffee is with a green juice (cucumber, parsley, celery, ginger, lemon). This will wake your body up with nourishment, not with stimulants. Your tastebuds will change with time, and you will crave green juices instead of coffee that crashes your energy and leaves you with bad breath.

Not only did I overcome serious suicidal depression (a growing epidemic in the Western world), but I also have more and more days of epic inner peace and happiness. You know it when you feel it.
It's because now I am filling my body with nutrients that nourish and recover my burned out adrenals, and I decreased the toxic load of my body, so that my organs can work properly. I eat the right foods and support a healthy gut biome. I also meditate most days, or practise mindfulness or yoga etc but to be honest, the physical part of the healing has been way more important. You cannot sit still in meditation and quiet the mind when it is racing because your adrenals are on fire, and your brain is inflamed from neurotoxins. The world today is a toxic one and just as the oceans and the fish and the soil, we humans fill up with toxic waste like heavy metals. I remember as a child and teenager the inner tension, massive anxiety and racing thoughts. I grew up like this, I didn't know any better. I was very toxic from heavy metals (from my mother's toxic load, vaccines and amalgam fillings in my milk teeth). My gut flora was in real bad shape from the gluten (I hav celiac genes), not having been breastfed, and an overall less than optimal diet full of processed crap and low in nutrients. The gut is your second brain and responsable for the production of neurotransmitters like serotonine and dopamine. I developed severe depression early on, an immense sadness and grief for no good reason. My mother was severely depressed herself (toxic from her amalgam fillings). I had intense anxiety, and later on experienced panic attacks. What helped me overcome depression, anxiety and panic attacks, racing thoughts and inner tension? Detox and Nourishment. The first time ever I felt an inner bliss and happiness for no reason was after 3 months of a 100 % raw food diet. I wondered if this was how humans are supposed to feel. I am not necessarily recommending a raw food diet for detoxing but, done right, it supports the body massively in healing and nourishment. Gut health, detoxification and nourishment with minerals, vitamins and the right fats for the brain are all crucial for overcoming depression and having a happy and healthy brain, and discovering inner peace. |
